Weeding & Detoxing: My 2 Favorite Pastimes

This weekend was awesome – I got down and dirty in my backyard. Hauling, trimming, raking, digging, weeding. Now my garden looks fresh, healthy, and flourishing. Dead-heading the flowers reminded me that pruning is good for people, not just daisies.

See, when I was 25 years old, I got sick.

Weeding & Detoxing - My 2 Favorite Pastimes

Weeding & Detoxing - My 2 Favorite Pastimes

Not just a cold or flu, or even a string of colds and flu.

Here I was in the “prime of my life” but I felt exhausted every day, was putting on pounds like never before, had migraine headaches several times a week, feeling depressed, and couldn’t stop slurping up caffeine and grabbing chocolate throughout the day.

Getting sick was one of the best things that ever happened to me, because it was a huge wake up call.

I can’t stand not feeling well. And to feel that bad for weeks and months was just more than I could take. I went to a doctor who asked me about my symptoms. When I explained how I was feeling, I was given two prescriptions: one pain medication for my headaches and one anti-depressant.

This is NOT the answer, I thought. I never filled those prescriptions.

So, What Are You Eating?

Instead, I reached out and looked for a more holistically minded doctor. I knew my mom had some food allergies, and I wanted to find out if I had any sensitivities.

Sitting on the examination table in this new doctor’s office, I was surprised to see posters with vegetables, pamphlets talking about vitamins and supplements, and a diagram of the human body with energy meridians and acupuncture points all over it.

When my doctor finally arrived and sat down across from me, one of his first questions wasn’t “why are you here today?” or “what are your symptoms?” – instead he asked, “what is your daily diet like?”

That one question blew the case wide open! I started to detail my diet at the time:

Breakfast: cereal with milk and coffee or a pastry with a latte on the way to work

Lunch: pizza and soda, subway sandwich and soda, or hamburger with fries and…you guessed it, soda

Snacks: salted nuts, chocolate, another latte, crackers and cheese, maybe an orange

Dinner: pasta with meat and cheese, Chinese take-out, soup and garlic bread, turkey sandwich with potato chips…you get the picture.

Nary a fresh fruit, rarely green vegetables, and often soda and caffeine throughout the day. Oh and sugar – lots of sugar.

This doctor didn’t recommend any painkillers or anti-depressants.

Instead he talked with me about how my diet was causing my discomfort, as well as my weight gain and lack of energy. He gave me a sample list of menus for the week, and suggested some books to read. He also told me that my sugar intake was feeding yeast in my body called candida albicans.

And he told me I should go off sugar and caffeine to help my body recover, balance and start to heal. He said, “Alex, you need a detox.”

I had about 5 minutes of freaking out and then something clicked – I had been feeling so bad over the last few months, even giving up sugar wouldn’t be so bad if it helped alleviate some of the pain and suffering.

The diet he recommended was wheat free, sugar free, caffeine free and excluded all animal products except a few eggs a week and some salmon.

I began to read everything I could and learned that a vegan diet, totally free of animal products, was an additional way I could improve my health.

I jumped in with both feet. I didn’t know what I was doing, but I started eating tofu for the first time, learned to enjoy stevia in my herbal tea, and only ate a small piece of chocolate a couple of times that first week. The first few days were really tough.

But about 7-10 days later, I remember waking up and feeling – AWAKE! It was amazing. I actually got out of bed and felt rested – and it was the best feeling ever. It was so easy to continue on this new eating plan because I felt so much better. I had energy to start going to the gym 5 days a week.

It was freeing and enlivening to take out the foods that were hurting my body. And I began to learn how to cook foods that would actually help me feel better and heal! Vegetables and whole grains were a revelation.

I also had the energy and clarity to look at the rest of my life and realized that my diet wasn’t the only thing that needed detoxing. I was unhappy with my career path, so I found a new job and went back to school. I wasn’t connected or passionate in my intimate relationship, so my sweet boyfriend and I went our separate ways.

Once I started pruning the dispassionate things from my life, my energy and life opened up even more and things really took off! My new career of healthy chef and holistic health counselor was fun, soul-filling, and interesting. I started dating new people and found deeper, more intimate relationships.

Detoxing and Weeding – My 2 Favorite Pastimes

Trimming Damaged Flowers Allows For New Growth & A Healthy System

Trimming Damaged Flowers Allows For New Growth & A Healthy System

Looking back it all makes sense.

See, I grew up in my parents’ garden. We had weekly chores that included raking, stacking wood, and cutting the lawn. Weeding and pruning were my favorite chores.

I love looking at a plant and finding what doesn’t need to be there, removing injured or dying flowers, branches and leaves, and cutting away the dead wood.

Taking away the useless, even harmful parts of a bush or tree help it grow stronger, create more blooms and leaves, and result in a more vibrant plant.

That’s what detox is like for people, too.

I love looking at someone’s diet and lifestyle, getting into the details about how they feel and what foods they choose. Finding and cutting away the harmful, useless aspects of a persons diet and life empower them to grow stronger, feel energized and create a new, powerful way of being.

Getting Clear, Without Judgment

My career is filled with opportunities to help people – teaching, writing, sharing healing recipes, information and products. I get to explore new and old methods of detoxing all the time – and the results are glorious. My clients all come from different places and backgrounds, but they all have two things in common – a desire to feel healthy and a “knowing” that choosing different foods can help them feel whole.

Clearing away the “dead wood” of my diet was the first step towards growth and healing. Once the no-longer-passionate lifestyle fell away, I found that my energy and life totally opened up and amazing things became possible.

I’ve since published 3 books, and traveled the world premiering Super Size Me with my son’s father, Morgan Spurlock. I live in New York City and have incredible friends and colleagues that continually inspire me.

While my diet and lifestyle aren’t always as “perfect” as they were in the beginning, I now recognize the signs faster that my body and energy are off balance. One chocolate dessert and one glass of wine usually make for a pretty groggy, impatient mommy in the morning.

Looking at your own diet and lifestyle, ask yourself: what is my body truly needing right now? Does this serve my life? What can I remove to help my body thrive and heal? Are there different choices I could be making that will energize me, help me succeed and live with delicious vitality?

Fabulous Fermented Foods

Fermented foods improve digestive, cardiovascular and immune health and have been used to regulate weight and appetite by reducing cravings for sugar, soft drinks, bread and pasta.

The key phrase you absolutely must watch for if you want to achieve the amazing health benefits is traditionally lacto-fermented.

Olives, pickles, wine, yogurt, sauerkraut, miso, kimchee, and kombucha are some of this category’s most popular delicacies.

Though the term “fermented” sounds a bit funky, the results of this ancient preparation and preservation technique – produced by breaking down carbohydrates and proteins by microorganisms such as bacteria, yeasts and molds – are delicious.

These naturally fermented foods are considered “functional foods” and “probiotics” that increase your overall nutrition, promote the growth of friendly intestinal bacteria, improve digestion and support immune function.

The fermentation process increases the natural B vitamins (even Vitamin B12, which after all come from bacteria), omega-3 fatty acids, digestive enzymes, and other immune chemicals that fight harmful bacteria and even cancer cells.

Lacto-fermentation is a traditional method of food preservation that has been used around the world for thousands of years. The technique is used to keep and store harvests and to add beneficial enzymes that aid in digestion and enhance vitamin absorption.

The synchronicity of traditional cultures pairing fermented foods with heavy protein and fatty dishes is remarkable and speaks to the genius of humans who pay attention. The bacteria and increased enzymatic action of naturally fermented foods helps the human body to digest and assimilate these proteins and fats. In Eastern Europe you find sauerkraut with sausages, in India lamb dishes are often served with yogurt. Chinese pickled cabbage is often found with animal proteins, while in Korea kimchee, a spicy type of sauerkraut, is served with barbeque meats and fried dishes. Japanese fish and meat dishes are usually served with pickled ginger or diakon radish, all of which help the body digest easier.

Lactic acid bacteria are naturally present on the surface of healthy plants. When vegetables are packed fresh into airtight vessels, the lactic acid bacteria become active and convert the natural sugars into lactic acid and carbon dioxide which preserve the food.

There is a big difference between naturally fermented foods and commercially processed, pasteurized foods.

Commercial fermented products found in supermarkets and stores are usually pasteurized. In other words, they are no longer ‘alive’, and the enzymes and beneficial bacteria have been destroyed.

Olive producers can now hold olives in salt-free brines by using an acidic solution of lactic acid, acetic acid, sodium benzoate and potassium sorbate, a long way off from the old time natural lactic-acid fermenting method of salt alone.

Some pickles are simply packed in salt, vinegar and pasteurized. Many yogurts are so laden with sugar that they are little more than puddings. Unfortunately, these modern techniques effectively kill off all the lactic acid producing bacteria and short-circuit their important and traditional contribution to intestinal and overall health.

By abandoning the ancient practice of lacto-fermentation, and insisting on a diet in which everything has been pasteurized, we have compromised the health of our intestinal flora and made ourselves vulnerable to legions of pathogenic microorganisims.

You can still buy or make healthy traditional varieties.

The stronger-flavored, traditional Greek olives found in olive bars or refrigerated sections at health food stores are not lye-treated and are still alive with active cultures.

So are “overnights,” the locally-crocked fresh pickling cucumbers made in local delis every few days, as well as the pickles, sauerkraut and other fermented foods you make yourself at home.

Generally, the more tangy and stronger the flavor (not counting any added jalapeño or other hot pepper flavorings), the more likely that the food will still have active and beneficial lactobacteria and enzymes.

Your body needs enzymes to properly digest, absorb, and make full use of your food. As you age, your body’s supply of enzymes decreases. This has caused many scientists to hypothesize that if you could guard against enzyme depletion, you could live a longer, healthier life.

My Favorite Fermented Food Brands

Since I don’t always have the time to make my own fermented foods, I rely on these brands to keep my digestive system strong:

Lacto-fermented Sauerkraut or Kimchee (Hawthorne Valley)

So Delicious Coconut Kefir (in yogurt section of health food stores)

GT’s Kombucha (in glass jars in cold beverage section of health food stores)

Miso Paste – any organic brand (refrigerator section of health food stores)

Simple Summer Desserts — Shhh! They're Good For You, Too!

Summer Smoothie-sicles

Summer Smoothie-sicles!

smoothie-sicle recipe, healthy popsicle recipes

Everyone loves popsicles – so why not make them a little healthier and more substantial than what the ice cream truck is offering? You can take this simple recipe and add all kinds of healthy secrets: non-dairy yogurt, liquid chlorophyll, dehydrated greens powders, vitamin C powder, or even soaked nuts and seeds. Go crazy!

I also like using the new silicon popsicle molds – why have your food freezing in petroleum based plastic molds?

Ingredients:

2 cups fresh fruit juice (except citrus)
¼ cup fresh green juice (kale, cucumber, celery, etc)
1 tablespoon liquid chlorophyll
1 cup non-dairy yogurt
1 Medjool date

Directions:

Blend all of the ingredients together until very smooth. Pour into popsicle molds. Freeze for at least 5 hours or until frozen solid.

Raw Choco-Almond Date Bars

It’s too hot to turn on the oven in summer, which is why raw desserts are so welcome – oh, and they taste amazing with almost no effort!

Using raw cacao powder provides the body with iron, protein, and antioxidants. Found online and in health food stores, raw cacao powder tastes good and is easier for many people to consume without negative effects of processed chocolate.

Note: To make the nuts easier to digest, you can soak them together covered in water overnight then drain before competing the recipe.

Ingredients:
1/3 cup unrefined coconut oil, melted
1 cup raw, unsalted almonds
½ cup raw, unsalted cashews
1 cup Medjool dates, pitted and chopped
1 cup unsweetened coconut flakes
1 tablespoon water
1/3 cup raw cacao powder or carob powder
pinch sea salt or pink Himalayan salt
1/3 cup brown rice syrup, agave nectar or real maple syrup

Directions:

1. Make sure the coconut oil is melted by measuring it into a small saucepan and heating it over low. Of course in the summer, mine is melted in the jar just sitting out at room temperature.
2. Combine the almonds and cashews in a food processor and pulse 10 to 12 times until they’re pulverized and no large pieces remain.
3. Add the remaining ingredients including the oil to the food processor and continue to pulse until the mixture is well combined, stopping to scrape down the sides as necessary.
4. Line a 9 inch square cake pan with parchment paper. Scoop the mixture into the baking dish and flatten with your hand or a rubber spatula. Wrap the pan with plastic and refrigerate for at least 1 hour up to overnight.
5. Remove from the refrigerator and cut the hardened cake into bars about 3 inches square.

Here’s A Quick Way To Kick Your Caffeine Cravings

Click Here To ReTweet This Blog & Recipe – thanks!

It’s summer and I’m thirsty and hot – a lot. New York City can be pretty sticky, and I need constant refreshment to get through a day. Try my favorite mid-day caffeine-free latte recipe!

Back in the day I would cool my afternoon energy lulls with an iced latte or frozen coffee drink from that place that rhymes with “Blahr – ducks.” Since detoxifying my body over a decade ago, I find that I don’t like or want as much caffeine, dairy, and sugar as I used to. Actually, I find that I feel even worse if I have them!

What’s wrong with a little caffeine you might be asking? Well, if you’re drinking several (or even one, for some people) servings of coffee, tea, cola, or “energy drink” a day, your sleep can be effected no matter how early in the day you drink it.

Your morning cup of tea or coffee can also dehydrate your skin making it look older than it is (horrors!), and makes you urinate more, leading to overall dehydration.

If you remember your high school chemistry, you might recall that calcium (from your bones) is an alkaline substance.

If you’re drinking caffeine (along with sugar and diary, especially) you can change the pH balance of your body to be overly acidic. There are strong links between regular caffeine use and osteoporosis, because of the acidic nature of many caffeinated beverages.

(Are you more than ready to get off caffeine, sugar, and dairy once and for all?

Join my 8 Week Delicious Detox Tele-Course here – we start Tuesday September 13th!)

Still, I like to enjoy a yummy cold drink, especially in the afternoons, and here is one of my favorite recipes:

1 cup iced Teeccino

½ cup MimiCCreme

Serve over ice

Teeccino is an herbal coffee-replacement that offers a roasted aroma, look and taste just like coffee, without the caffeine. Or the caffeine crash a few hours later.

MimiCCreme is a line of non-dairy, soy-free, gluten-free nut creams that make any cream recipe totally amazing. I like the unsweetened version for my iced teeccino in the afternoon, but the sweetened versions are great for desserts, baking, smoothies and breakfast recipes.

Enjoy your caffeine free latte!

How To Get Off Blood Pressure & Cholesterol Meds In Half The Time

I love my job – my client Gerry tells his story of our work together in his own words:

“My Doctor put me on blood pressure medication in December 2010 …I didn’t feel good being on these meds and didn’t want to be for the rest of my life – I also didn’t want to be on an acid reflux meds for the rest of my life, but I was constantly waking up at night with stomach pain.  My body was feeling achy and foggy and I wouldn’t have energy on many days no matter how much sleep I got. I have always had sinus issues, including congestion, runny nose, and cough. When I would get sick, it wouldn’t be for days, it would be for a couple of weeks.

Here are the results I’ve experienced in the last 3 months working with Alex:

1 – My cholesterol dropped 60 points since I’ve started on your detox diet!! My BP started at 130/90 & is now 110/70 and I’m no longer taking BP medicine!! My cholesterol went from HDL-39 to 45, and LDL-146 to 110!

2 – I have much more energy! I don’t feel the afternoon “crash” after lunch. I can breathe much easier, my sinuses have cleared! I don’t feel dizzy or nauseous. I rarely sneeze much anymore. I have minimal acid reflux and my stomach pain has stopped!!

3 – I did not expect to lose weight, since that wasn’t my plan. In the past 7 weeks I’ve lost 10 pounds. I’m much more aware of what I put in my body before I eat. I read labels, plan meals ahead. I think of food as medicine to nourish my body. I feel so much better!!

Alex, you are wonderful and I cannot thank you enough!! I would highly recommend you to everyone!! =)”

Thank you, Gerry!

Now You Can Try Amande For Free (It’s My New Favorite Yogurt!)

Click Here To Tweet About This Contest!

I discovered that dairy really doesn’t do my body good back in 2000, and ever since I’ve been looking for new dairy-free products to spice up my menus.Laken loves amande yogurt

Many of my clients find they feel and look better when they remove dairy from their diets, so in the interest of market-research I get to spend a lot of time in health food stores, scanning the shelves for new products.

(I wrote an article for the super-glamorous CoCoEcoMagazine last month about going dairy-free to improve adult acne and eczema…)

Also, my 4.5 year old son is really into yogurt, and I like feeding it to him: it has those great live cultures like acidophilus, bifidobacterium bifidum, and other lus-es and um’s and us-es…all those unpronounceable words that mean your digestive system is getting the healthy bacteria it needs to keep your entire body running smoothly.

Non-dairy yogurts are also an easy snack that offers protein, calcium, and healthy fats, but it’s hard to find one that’s lightly sweetened.

I just discovered Amande yogurt from Cascade Fresh, and I couldn’t be happier! Laken too!

(Do you see that grinning face above?)

Amande is made from almond milk, fruit juices, and truly natural flavors and colors. No hidden MSG or toxic colorings here; instead, they use annatto, purple carrot, and elderberry juices.

Almonds are highly regarded in traditional medicines for supporting the digestive tract and nervous system, and are the only nut that helps to alkalinize an overly acidic body pH. According to Ayurvedic medicine, almonds strengthen the bones, nerves, and reproductive organs.

This stuff is so free of dietary problems (unless you’re allergic to almonds) that almost anyone can enjoy it: dairy free, soy free, lactose free, no refined sugar, gluten free, no casein, vegan, and kosher…

Amande is great for people who prefer or need both dairy-free and soy-free foods. It’s also good for people who need to avoid too many sugars. So that’s pretty much everyone!

You could win some free yogurt! If you want to try a free sample of Amande, enter my blog contest here by leaving a comment before Friday, June 24th at 12pm EST.

Tell me why you want to try this awesome new product line! And be sure to ask your local grocer to start carrying Amande and other great dairy-free options so that you, and others, can get healthy, delicious foods to enjoy.
