Fine Wine – CalNaturale Organic Wines

While I’m not the biggest booze hound around, I do enjoy the occasional glass of “Mommy’s Red Grape Juice” with dinner or while out on the town.

Enjoying CalNaturale Wines At Celebrate Brooklyn With Friends

This summer I was introduced to a nice new line of organic wines that made hot weather picnics easier and tastier. CalNaturale’s line of TetraPak wines come in 2 sizes, and the grapes are organic. The smaller 500 ml container was the perfect size for my back-packed picnic to the local outdoor music festival with friends and my son. And since that size is worth about three glasses, we weren’t tempted to finish off a larger bottle – you know, just to clean up.

Those TetraPaks are also recyclable so we tossed it in the blue bin on the way out of the music venue, feeling pretty eco-chic about our whole adventure.

This Thanksgiving I’ll be turning to these wines again for my family’s feasting. Not only are they easy to carry around, the wine tasted delicious.

I tried the Cabernet Sauvignon and the Chardonnay and loved them both. I’m not usually a fan of white wine, as they often give me a headache.

I know, red wine is most often the headache culprit, but my body seems to be sensitive to white. Ever wonder about wine headaches? Turns out no one knows for sure, but the most likely culprit is histamines. Some people lack an enzyme in their intestines that can help them metabolize histamine, and I must be lacking in that enzyme.

If you’re looking for a nice, easy to carry, organic wine for the holidays, try out this line from CalNaturale ~ and don’t forget to recycle the “bottle.”

Amanda Enrolls Her Family & Is Kickin' Caffeine Out!

One of my Delicious Detox members has jumped into the process early and has been making awesome changes already – and we haven’t even officially started! Amanda shared with us on the members-only online community:

“I’m going to post a copy of the letter I just wrote my husband enlisting family support:

I, Andrew, understand that my wife is preparing to embark upon an 8 week detoxification program, beginning September 20. I may be unaware that my wife has been consuming copious amounts of sugar (often in the form of dark chocolate) and caffeine (a drug) just to make it through the day. Increasingly she has been eating processed non-foods such as chips and drinking soda (chemical soup). This has been a pattern for many, many months and she has been unable to pull herself out of these daily dietary habits on her own. This letter is to inform me that when my wife begins to detox, she is going to feel worse before she feels better, because she will be flushing out lots of toxins and chemicals. She will likely feel irritable, emotional, impatient, and fatigued. She will want to quit and may do some crying. She will have headaches, mood swings, and may catch a cold or other minor illness. Symptoms should be the worst the first 1-2 weeks. Please support her through this time and gently remind her that she is doing this to be healthy and is using this program because she felt that she needed help. Tell her that her commitment and hard work will be so worth it and that she will be feeling more energetic, stronger, healthier, and more positive very soon. Suggest that she takes a hot bath, do some yoga, read a nice book, drink some herbal tea, or offer to play pool or cards with her. Do not let her veg out in front of the TV with unhealthy snacks and do not let her have a self-pity party! During these 2 months, please refrain from suggesting that we eat out anywhere that she is unable to order a yummy, healthy meal (like a big ‘ol salad!). Please do not bring home chips, soda, etc… for the home when you run errands. Please be discreet with the things that you buy for yourself for work and take them to work soon after buying them! This will be extremely helpful until her food cravings no longer have a hold on her. Please do not suggest to the kids during dinner that we hit Dairy Queen or Fro Yo for a special treat (maybe you can take them on the evenings that she is working!). Please understand that your wife may temporarily become a worse version of herself before she becomes a better one. Also try to understand how important it is to her to become healthier. She wants to feel good and to be the best wife and mother that she can be. She no longer wants to feel controlled by Trader Joes’ organic dark chocolate covered almonds and Dunkin Donuts coffee.

XOXO Soon-to-be-a-healthier-Amanda

He loved the letter (I was a bit nervous). He thought it was funny–I had to clarify that it wasn’t really a joke. Hahaha. Needless to say, he made a lovely salad to go with dinner tonight. I think it was a success.”

Today, Amanda reported that she’s down to 1 cup of green tea a day, so her Delicious Detox is already working wonders!

Sweet Feedback On Delicious Detox Program!

“I am amazed at how my determination and motivation are restoring to my 20-something vigor. I’m still a work in progress but am incredibly happy and, might I add, healthier nowadays.

Not enough thank-yous to cover your support, encouragment, etc. to help me get to here. And, I look forward to another installment of your Week in a Weekend series. Keep doing what you’re doing! Go vitality!”

I’m really good at this, and we could do it together…

It’s Friday afternoon here in Oregon where I’m visiting my family – my younger sister graduated with honors from high school this week, and we’re having a blast celebrating!

While I’ve been helping put together the party plans, run errands and pitch in with making snacks for a pack of hungry teens, I realized something interesting.

I LOVE to create fun, vibrant, healthy experiences for people and support them in going after their dreams.

Here’s what I mean…

This weekend is all about my sister, her accomplishments, celebrating the end of high school, the beginning of her “next steps” in life, and showing her that we support her in going on to work towards her passions. It’s also about celebrating my parents and what an amazing job they have done raising all of us, helping us achieve our goals, and showing them how much their continued support and love means to us.

I’m really filled with love, joy, and thanks watching how my family operates. I see where I got this desire to help others. My dad and step-mom are career educators and go the extra mile to teach, share, and pitch in when they’re needed. It’s truly inspiring! I’m just so grateful for where I come from.

I’ve been raised around people who are full service educators, who offer the A to Z in theory and practical hands-on “how to get it done” skills.

Most people like to help out – they’ll throw a party or volunteer for an event, helping out at a table or cleaning up.

Me? I’ll lovingly talk to you about your passions, goals, and concerns, dig deep into my bag of tricks and offer you an array of resources, tools and experiments to help you find the path that will get you feeling and looking better right away.

Party for my sister’s graduation? Awesome!

I love helping to pick up balloons, find a funny yet sweet graduation card, fill it with cash, make an inspiring mix-CD for her car, cooking some healthy, delicious snacks to share with the friends and family – creating a whole, holistic experience of celebration!

I realized why I’ve been doing this work for so long, and why I’m so passionate about teaching people how to live a deliciously vital life… and why I’m still loving it!

It’s all about providing an enriching, inspiring, motivating, supportive environment for someone to go on and make a great life!

Except rather than party favors, vegan cupcakes and balloons, we get to remove toxic habits, damaging foods, experiment with healing meals, add in some fun tools and books, learn new skills, extract old stories and other junk that gets in the way of feeling and looking great.

You know it’s true.

We all need someone to show us the possibility of what we can achieve in our health and life.

We all have missing pieces that need to get filled in to finish the puzzle of our lives.

With someone guiding you, your life can be a fun, deliciously vital and vibrant party filled with richness and pure energy and you can grow healthy, strong and beautiful.

Be honest and smile – What are you ready to celebrate?

Want to get down and have fun experimenting with amazing new foods? Want to remove the stuff that’s keeping you stuck in your old pain? What are you ready to detox from your life?

If you’re ready for a professional party planner like me on your team, I’m glad to help. And I work with people all over the world using the phone, internet and even Skype! (Yes, our sessions can be video and free!)

Healthy New Year’s!

New Year’s resolutions for weight loss are mostly doomed to fail, but it’s not because “you did it wrong,” or “you’re just not strong enough, good enough, smart enough, worthy enough” to be skinnier. It’s not because you don’t have the will power – you’ve probably put in a lot of effort and money over the years to making January 1st a “new beginning.”

Here’s the real scoop: trying to lose weight in winter is the hardest, and most unnatural, time of year to reduce your calorie intake. This whole New Year’s Resolution for weight loss is arbitrary, media-hyped, and a losing-bet. The human body naturally tries to keep weight on in the winter as a survival technique. Confused? Keep reading and I’ll tell you more.

Your body goes through seasonal changes just like trees, plants, and hibernating animals. The human body uses calories to keep us warm and naturally holds onto fat to help us weather the freezing weather. Since calories = heat = winter survival, eating gives your body the fuel it needs to protect itself from cold winds, frigid temperatures, and walking your kid to and from school 20 minutes in sub-freezing temperatures twice a day.

Limiting your calorie intake in the winter flips an invisible switch that triggers your body’s natural survival mechanisms to store fuel like a squirrel hiding nuts.  The crazy part is, restricting your food intake starting January 1st can actually cause your body to create more fat storage.

So wait until springtime for a real cleansing and calorie restriction program. Honor your human nature and give your body the calories it needs to get through winter successfully – but this doesn’t mean you can throw all caution to the wind!

January is a great time to create a Resolution about food and health: Decide to transform your menus into natural, real meals filled with whole foods and seasonal ingredients. Get acquainted with whole grains, beans, seasonal veggies from your area, nuts, seeds, and sea vegetables. Create a new habit of including whole grains, beans, and steamed leafy greens at least twice a day. Use the seasonal produce available in your area to bring balance and energy to your body while you remove the junky, processed, and packaged foods this winter.

By changing the quality of your meals, rather than focusing on the quantity of calories and restricting yourself during this season, you can create a total body transformation that will give you the energy you need to make big changes to your weight in the spring when cleansing and reducing is more appropriate. The cool thing is this: when you start shifting your foods to be natural and high-quality, your weight will slowly start reducing on its own! But not in a forced, deprivation style. You’ll get balanced. Your energy will be better. You’ll sleep better and have an easier time kicking caffeine and sugar cravings.

If you want to make this shift with expert guidance, camaraderie, and support, you can sign up for 1 of 20 spots available in my upcoming Red Hot Hearts Tele-Series, which begins 2/15/11. The program provides recipes, meal planning, support, emotional guidance and fun!

I’d be glad to have you!

I hope you have a blessed year full of fun, adventure, healthy vibes, and laughs!

Be well,

Alex

Way to go Bill!

Detox Products You’ll Love: Yogi Tea (Win Some Here!)

Natural remedies for toxic modern living don’t have to be expensive and hard to integrate.

What could be easier than detox in a tea bag? Tea has been used throughout human history by every culture and civilization to deliver powerful herbal benefits to the sick and stressed. Tea is easy to make and easy to consume even when you don’t have an appetite or much energy.

One of my favorite brands for this type of medicine-in-a-cup is Yogi Tea’s Detox line.

Yogi has created three different formulations of herbs, roots, and spices into delicious teas.

“Detox” is useful for liver and kidney support. These two organs are very important for cleansing the body of toxins.

“Skin Detox” helps to purify the skin and includes Stevia Leaf, a natural, non-caloric sweet leaf.

“Peach Detox” is formulated to promote healthy kidney function and includes wonderful Indian spices like cinnamon, ginger, cardamom, and clove for a very chai-like flavor and aroma.

I have been stocking my “kitchen pharmacy” with Yogi Teas for years now (and not just because it comes from my beloved Oregon), and was thrilled when Yogi decided to sponsor my Detox Box for my current September Reboot Detox Group.

Since I have a couple of boxes left, I decided to hold a contest!

So here’s how you can win some Yogi Tea from me:

* Leave a comment on my blog here answering these questions: What would you most like to know about detoxification and wellness for 2011? What’s your favorite part about my website (I’m planning some big changes soon, and want your input!)

Enter your comment by Friday 9/17 at 3pm, and you could win!

Be well, Alexandra
