I keep a coffee grinder for things other than coffee: I use it to grind flax when I make my morning shakes (yum), and also grind capsules of cinnamon, psillium (sp?), anything that can go into my shakes. My recipe might offend some, but I find it a low calorie, high fiber way to start the day--8 oz milk, one scoop slim fast (or any meal substitute powder), two tbsp cocoa, one tbsp instant coffee, two tbsp ground flax, two caps cinnamon (ground), one tbsp bulk fiber (generic works), a scoop of ice (probably about 8 oz), and enough water drizzled in to let the blender make a smooth mix. Usually I wind up with about 32 oz, and of course some of it is air from the blender.

The grinder which can be cleaned by "grinding" a piece of bread in it, costs about $10. I bought mine maybe five years ago, and it's as good as new. The fancier ones don't seem to last.

I find the drink is more effective for constipation. Added to hot cereal is a good daily practice if you're not having elimination problems.
Be well, Alex

Monica - if your blender is *perfectly dry* it will grind the seeds, but if it's the least bit wet (damp, even), the seeds will stick to the walls and make a mess. You can grind a few days' worth and store the powder in the freezer.

Do the ground Flax seeds need to be mixed with the juice to be more effective? I eat hot oat bran cereal with a tablespoon of ground flax seeds daily, but wondered if they would be more effective in juice form.

Blenders might work if you pulse the flax seeds. You need to pulverize them into a chunky powder. You could also try a small food processor or a mortar and pestle.
